There was an unexpected problem with the colours of my magazine so I have print screened what it was supposed to look and put it into paint. This shows what it is supposed to look like.

Planning and evaluation of the article

This is the first example of an article from a pop music magazine. This article is in the form of an interview and is questioning the Jonas Brothers on the new camp rock film. It uses language such as 'Hello campers' to create a friendly tone and engage the reader into the article. It uses alliteration 'ritzy red' to add interest to the article. As the target audience of Top of the pops magazine is 11-15 years, the vocabulary used is not very complex and is easy to understand. 'We want the girls we date to be our biggest fans' also makes it suitable for the target audience as said in my earlier blog the target audience is mainly female.

This is the second example of an article from top of the pops magazine. It uses alliteration 'Dolls drama' as the main sell to attract the readers eye. It also used play on worlds 'Men utd' to add humour and interest to the article.'Enders go west' is also an example of this because it is usually 'Eastenders' The article contains alot of captions to the images which just basically say what the photo is of.

This is my article I will use in my double page spread. I have chosen to do an interview of a new member of a girlband.

Hot gossip interview with Imogen Wright
Britains top glamour model has a newfound talent in the music industry and is the new member of girlband LIPS.

So, Imogen what inspired you to start singing?
Well ever since I was young I wanted to be a singer. I wanted a change from my modelling career and the two other girls are my best friends so I thought I might aswell go for it. After all, I had nothing to loose as I always had my modelling career to fall back on.

Do you prefer modelling or singing?
Its a tough choice. As I said I've always wanted to be a singer but I also love modelling. I like them both for different reasons. Singing I love being with the girls but modelling is more thrilling and exciting as I never know what my next shoot is going to involve.

What do you and the other LIPS girls get up to when your not rehearsing?
We are typical girls. We go shopping, out clubbing, go to parties, get our hair and nails done. I also spend time with my boyfriend, cook him dinner and pamper him as I don't get to see him as much as I would like due to my work commitments.

Is LIPS planning a tour soon?
Well you'll just have to wait and see. We've just started working on our new album, so we are hoping to have a tour soon. Its all very exciting for us but you never know what is going to happen.

Photo editing

I chose to edit my photos before I put them in my magazine. I wanted to remove the background and change it to the same colour as my magazine page to make it blend in and look professional. I used Adobe photoshop to do this.

Firstly I removed the red eye on the photos by using the red eye tool and selecting the eye.

Then I used the magnetic lassoo tool to detect the edge of the photos. I then copied the cutout of my characters onto a new document. I then filled in the background with the colour that was going to match the background of my page.

This is an example of what a photo was like before I edited it.

This is what the photo looked like when I removed the red eye and cut it out and recoloured the background

This image will be the main image on my magazine cover.

Photos

This is the first image I took to use in my magazine. I have dressed my band in fashionable clothes. These are a typical feature of popstars. I have also used bright makeup for them which is attractive and exciting and will attract the target audience.I have got my characters to smile because this makes them look happy, friendly and appealing to the audience. In this image I used a high angle shot.I don't think I will use this image in my magazine at it makes the characters seem powerless as it makes it look like someone is looking down on them.
This is the second image I took to use in my magazine. This is a medium shot so this means the angle has no specific effect on the audience. I think a suitable heading for this image would be 'LIPS reach the top' as my characters are jumping. All my characters are also smiling which makes them look friendly to the audience. Also it looks like the characters are having fun so it makes the magazine look interesting and fun to read.
This is the third image I took to use in my magazine. This is a side angle long shot. I dont think this is effective as you can nearly see the back of one of the characters which reduces how friendly she looks.
This is the final image I took to use in my magazine. I think this is the image I will use on my front cover as it shows all my characters looking happy and having fun together.

Flat plans

This was my first idea for my front cover. I have used bright and feminine colours to attract my target audiences attention as females like colours such as pink and purple, and as they are aged 11-15 they will be attracted to the brightness of them. My masthead uses the font I have chosen from my other blog and looks appealing and intestesting. My main sell is about the 'Pop factor' which is a TV show I have invented. I got my inspiration for this from TV shows such as 'Pop Idol' and 'The Xfactor'. The main image is going to be of a character called Rosie Louise who has just won the 'Pop factor' and is going to share her views in an exclusive interview. I have used other sells such as 'Celeb love secrets revealed' and 'Hot stuff, new boyband reality releases their debut' to attract the target audience as they will be interested in hot boys and secrets. I have used language such as exclusive, shock and secrets to make it seem dramatic and that they can only find out the information from my magazine and nowhere else. My slogan is 'Britains no.1 stop 4 pop'. I have used No.1 and 4 instead of Number one and for becuase its more friendly and appealing to my target audience. Also stop and pop rhyme so it makes it fun and chatty and reminds the reader of the title of the magazine. I have used a rhetorical question, this draws the reader into the magazine and makes them feel like they are part of it and their not just going to be reading things about other people. The price of my magazine is £1.40. This is suitable for my target audience because they are of an age of which they get pocket money, so this seems a reasonable price.

This is my second idea for a front cover. I have used the same font for the masthead but have filled it in blue and contrasted this with pink outline. This makes it appealing to the target audience becuase they are feminine colours and are  bright and eye catching. My main sell for this cover is about a hot new boyband called 'Reality' that release a debut album. The word 'hot' makes it attractive to the target audience because my target audience is females which will be interested in hot males.Other sells are about the pop factor show and real life stories. These both sound interesting and exciting. As with my previous front cover design the price of the magazine will also be £1.40.

I have come to the conclusion that I will use a mixture of both of my front cover designs when creating my final magazine front cover as I feel elements of both covers are important and make it appealing to my target audience.

This is the design of my contents page. I have situated the masthead at the top of the page so it is clear to the readers that they will find the contents on this page. Around the edge of the page is the list of contents which is split into groups which are: News and Views, Celeb Gossip, Fashion and TV&Reviews. It also includes a flash about an exclusive pull out of my hot boy band which will attract my target audience. I will include a note from the author, this is very common in most pop magazines, as it allows interaction between the author and readers, this will especially appeal to my target audience.Underneath there will  be an image from a story featured in the magazine to catch readers attention.

This is my design for the double page spread of my magazine. The main headline is 'Victory for Rosie'. Rosie is the winner of the the 'Pop factor'. I have chosen a headline about a new artist and on latest gossip so that the reader can get exclusive new gossip about them. On the left hand side is the main image of Rosie. Scattered around the main body text are pull quotes of important gossip which will attract the readers attention and make it more interesting. The page will also feature information on the next series of the pop factor. This will make the reader want to buy the magazine again because it advertises future gossip and information. This will also increase interaction with the reader because it will allow them to follow the star. I have also included a section that focuses on the rest of the contestants from the show. This adds variety as it doesn't just focus on one person from the show.

Fonts

I have chosen to call my magazine 'The pop stop'. The word pop relates to the music genre I have chosen and the word stop makes people want to stop and look at the magazine. I need to find a suitable font for my magazine cover that is suitable for my target audience. I have used http://www.dafont.com/ to do this.

These were my final three favourites that I have chosen that could be used in my logo. The first two are curved which makes them more suitable for the female audience. Also, they are informal and would be used on a teen magazine rather than a broadsheet newspaper. The first font has hearts and is in a grafitti like style, the second font is a bubble style font and the third one is quite strong and bold.

My final choice of font for my mast head of my magazine was the first one. I chose this becuase it was the most feminine which made it most suitable for my target audience. It is also informal so looks friendly and inviting.

For the title of my contents page I picked a font that looked attractive and suitable for my target audience.

I have picked this font because it looks interesting and fun. I think it is suitable for my target audience because it is curved which makes it informal and suitable for the younger population.

This is the font I have chosen for the main headline of my double page spread. I think it is attractive and looks exciting so will draw the readers eye.I will use different colours in the font and the shadow to make it look interesting.

Analysis of existing magazines

I have chosen two magazine covers, a contents page and a double page spread of typical pop magazines and I am going to analyse the features of these.

This is the front cover of top of the pops magazine. Top of the pops is a monthly magazine produced by the BBC. It includes chart information, celebrity gossip, beauty and fashion tips. It specialises in the pop music genre which is why I have chosen it.

The masthead of the magazine is consistent and is the same design on every issue. Occasionally the colour of the title changes but the size and the style of the lettering remains the same. On every issue there is the BBC logo and the barcode which are always situated in the same place.

The main flash of the magazine is 'High school musical'. 'High school musical' is very popular amongst teenagers of today which will make them want to pick the magazine up and find out more about them. Zac Efron is also considered as a 'god' for teenage girls which will also make the want to buy it. When the readers first see the magazine they will see the headline 'Exclusive interview you're a star' posted across it. This word exclusive means they cant find out about it anywhere else so it makes them want to read it and the direct address 'you're a star' makes it seem like the magazine is talking directly to the reader which draws the reader in to it.

Other headlines such as 'Celebrity love secrets exposed' and 'My diet of death' are smaller on the cover but are used to draw the readers attention by using shocking stories to tempt them to buy it. They are also chatty and informal.

The magazine also looks entertaining, exciting and informative because it has alot of stories posted all over the cover.

Every month the layout of this magazine is the same. This will help readers find their favourite information every month.

The price of this magazine is £2.20. I think this is slightly overpriced considering it is aimed at teens because they only receive pocket money so it should be cheaper.

This is another example of a pop music magazine. This is smash hits. It is now defunct but I can still use it as an example. This magazine was issued every fortnight. It included information on celebrity gossip, music and fashion and cosmetics.

As with top of the pops magazine the font and style of the masthead remains the same each issue but the colours of the title change each time.

The main flash of the magazine is McFly. McFly are a popular band for teenagers to listen to which will mean they will want to find out about them and want to buy the magazine. When the reader first picks up the magazine they will see the headline 'Son of dork, why McFly should be afraid...very afraid' This is dramatic and sounds bad so readers will want to know why.

Other headlines such as 'Louis xfactor gossip' and 'Greendays secret life exposed' seem interesting and exciting and will make people want to pick it up and buy it. Language such as 'secret' and 'gossip' makes it seem like they are going to find out things that other people won't know. The designer of this magazine also makes the target audience want to buy it by adding bonus's such as 'Win poll winners tickets'.

The price of this magazine is £2.00. I think this is reasonable but could be cheaper considering the target audience is people that only earn pocket money.

Top of the pops magazine doesnt have a contents page so I am going to analyse a contents page from Mizz magazine becuase this is the most similar one I could find.I emailed the editor of Mizz magazine to check the target audience was similar to the top of the pops magazine. They replied:

Mizz is aimed at 10-14 year old girls. This is similar to my target audience so it is suitable for me to analyse.

The images on the page are of actors from Disney films. This makes it suitable for the younger audience because generally older people won't want to read about Disney films. The image of Zac Efron will help sell the magazine becuase females love him and the target audience is females. He is also an international star so is well known. There is also an image of someone modelling some fashionable clothes which will make the reader want to read on so they can find out where the clothes were from and also females of the younger age are generally interested in fashion.

The colour scheme of this page is mainly bright colours. This makes it suitable for the target audience becuase younger people are usually attracted to bright colours. They are also quite feminine colours which shows that it is aimed at a female target audience.

The title that states its a contents page is quite small and in a sans serif font. It is also in bold and red on a white background which makes it stand out. However becuase the font is small and its off-centre it makes it hard to know where the contents actually are.

The remained of the writing on the contents page is also in sans serif font. Colours have always been chosen that will stand out and make it clear for the audience to read. However this font is quite small so this could make it hard for the reader to read.

The language used throughout this page is colloquial and chatty. For example 'wake up' and 'enjoy'. This makes it informal and will attract the target audience becuase they will want it to be chatty and fun towards them. They are also catchy so will stick in peoples heads and make them remember them.

This is a double page spread from top of the pops magazine.

The tone of the language used in the article is colloquial and chatty. An example of this is 'hello campers'. This is friendly and will invite the audience to read the article. It is also advertising a film so it has included the casts reviews of the film and they all say its good so it will make the audience want to watch the film.

The image that dominates the page is of the Jonas Brothers who are popular amongst teenage girls which will attract their attention. There is also images of the cast introducing themselves which is friendly.

The colours used throughout the double page spread are bright and inviting and will attract the readers eye.

The quote 'We want the girls we date to be our biggest fans'has been pulled. This makes the teenage girls reading the magazine want to be their fans because

The question of the interview is put in bold and in a different colour to the answer. This shows the reader what part is the question and which is the answer. Also it shows the change in the speaker.
